NDKC Leads #NowForClimate Movement on World Environment Day 2026

Inspired by Pope Francis’ call for integral ecology in Laudato Si’, the Notre Dame of Kidapawan College (NDKC) Community Extension Services spearheaded a dynamic multi-sectoral environmental initiative on June 5, 2026, in celebration of World Environment Day.

Anchored on the theme #NowForClimate, the activity brought together youth advocates, student leaders, church organizations, and community volunteers in a collective effort to address pressing environmental concerns through action and education.

Faith and Advocacy for the Environment

The celebration began at the NDKC College Lounge with an Ecological Rosary, a prayer gathering dedicated to the healing of the Earth. Participants reflected on ecological conversion, climate justice, and the protection of vulnerable ecosystems.

Following the prayer service, an information session introduced participants to the Rights of Nature (RoN) framework, which recognizes nature as a rights-bearing entity rather than merely a resource for human use. The discussion highlighted the fundamental rights of ecosystems to exist, flourish, regenerate, maintain their natural functions, and access clean water.

The session also emphasized how the Rights of Nature framework grants legal standing to ecosystems, enabling human stewards to advocate and take legal action on behalf of nature against environmental harm. The discussion was conducted in partnership with the Philippine Misereor Partnership, Inc. (PMPI).

Taking Action for the Nuangan River

The learning session was followed by a hands-on environmental activity focused on the protection and rehabilitation of the Nuangan River.

Participants proceeded to the riverbank area from Nursery Phase 1 to Phase 2 in Purok Ponkan, Barangay Poblacion, Kidapawan City, where they conducted a cleanup drive and tree-growing activity in partnership with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).

Volunteers collected waste along the riverbanks and waterways while planting native tree species to help stabilize the soil, prevent erosion, and strengthen climate resilience in the area.

Through prayer, education, and community action, NDKC reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and its mission of forming socially responsible citizens who actively care for our common home
