Empowering the Next Generation: KaRoN Youth Leadership Formation Promotes Environmental Stewardship and the Rights of Nature
On August 1, 2026, the Notre Dame of Kidapawan College (NDKC) Farm became a venue for ecological advocacy and youth empowerment as it hosted the Kabataang Rights of Nature (KaRoN) Youth Leadership Formation organized by KaRoN Youth KidCot. In partnership with the NDKC Community Extension Services (CES) Office and the Philippine Misereor Partnership Incorporated (PMPI), the day-long formation program brought together young leaders committed to strengthening their understanding of environmental protection, community participation, and the inherent rights of nature.
Cultivating a Culture of Environmental Stewardship
The program began with a welcome circle facilitated by the KaRoN Youth KidCot Officers, followed by an opening message from Julito T. Lawag, NDKC CES MVTP OJT Supervisor, who highlighted the importance of collaboration, active participation, and youth involvement in addressing environmental concerns.
Through engaging activities and interactive discussions, the participants explored the significant role of young people in responding to pressing ecological challenges. The first session, “Environmental Stewardship and Leadership,” was facilitated by Gil Roean Batongmalaki, who emphasized that environmental stewardship goes beyond conservation efforts. He encouraged the participants to embrace ethical leadership, develop a deeper connection with nature, and actively promote sustainable practices in their communities.
The session fostered meaningful exchanges among the participants as they shared insights and reflected on possible initiatives that can contribute to environmental sustainability.
Understanding the Rights of Nature
In the afternoon, the participants engaged in Session 2: “Introduction to KaRoN Youth and Rights of Nature,” facilitated by Dr. Ivy B. Yecyec, NDKC CES Director. The session introduced the participants to the KaRoN Youth movement and its advocacy on the Rights of Nature, a framework that recognizes ecosystems as entities with inherent rights to exist, thrive, and regenerate.
Dr. Yecyec guided the young leaders in understanding the importance of shifting from a human-centered view of the environment toward a more holistic perspective that recognizes the interconnectedness between people and the natural world. The session equipped the participants with knowledge and perspectives necessary to become advocates for ecological protection and sustainability.
Listening to Nature and Envisioning a Sustainable Future
The formation program integrated learning with experiential activities through a Vision Walk, a reflective exercise that encouraged participants to reconnect with nature and engage in mindful observation of their surroundings at the NDKC Farm. The activity was facilitated by Ronabel T. Tan, KaRoN Youth KidCot Chairwoman.
The reflection activity culminated in a collaborative art installation entitled “Our Vision for Kidapawan.” Through this creative output, the participants expressed their aspirations, commitments, and proposed actions toward building a greener and more sustainable Kidapawan City.
Inspiring Young Environmental Leaders
The formation program concluded with the awarding of certificates to the participating youth leaders. Br. Jay-jay Escuadro, FMS, IBED CMRE Coordinator, conveyed his message of appreciation and encouragement to the participants for their commitment to environmental advocacy.
The activity ended with thanksgiving messages, a closing prayer, and a group photo, marking the beginning of a renewed commitment among the participants to promote environmental stewardship and the Rights of Nature.
The successful implementation of the KaRoN Youth Leadership Formation was made possible through the guidance of facilitators Ronabel T. Tan and Robert Jay C. Lucasan, with the support of Isabela Beatrice G. Rodriguez and Ronel Saldivar. Through this initiative, NDKC, together with its partners, continues to empower young leaders who are prepared to advocate for environmental sustainability and contribute to the protection of nature in Kidapawan City and beyond.
